1. The Dalai Lama and Depression Treatment

Inner peace is a gift -- nurtured through meditation, empathy, and compassion.

Dalai Lama Summary: The Dalai Lama has traveled the world for decades and has several books that specifically address the personal benefits of compassion for others. This article succinctly provides an overview of his thoughts on the subject of compassion. It then details research being conducted at Emory University, through the Emory-Tibetan Partnership, that is revealing significant mental and physiological benefits of compassion meditation in dealing with depression.

Tip You Can Use: Don’t be content to live with pain, stress, or chronic medical conditions. For instance, depression is not caused by depression—there are underlying psychological and physical conditions that cause it. Find the cause and fix the problem.

3. A New Way to Look at Resolutions

Dr. Dean Ornish Summary: Read what Dr. Ornish has to say about resolutions. People frequently view New Year’s resolution, whether it be a change in diet or a commitment to work out more often, as a resolve to deprive themselves of things that they enjoy. However, we equally often forget that making these changes in our life will actually just trade a short-term gratification for more of a health and happiness benefit that outweighs the short-term satiation.

Tip You Can Use: Instead of trying to restrain yourself from things that you enjoy which only provide short-term gratification, mentally associate that with the negative consequences. For instance, before wolfing down that super-sized fast food lunch think about how lethargic you are going feel all afternoon and the stress you will feel when you get home because you couldn’t get everything done you wanted to at work—not to mention the guilt you will probably feel about its effects on your weight and health.

4. The Spectrum:  A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lost Weight and Gain Health by Dean Ornish, M.D.

The SpectrumIn this newly released book by world-renowned scientist, researcher and Physician Dean Ornish, M.D. shows us how to personalize a way of eating and a way of living based on your own health goals, needs, and preferences. Here’s how it works:

Since THE SPECTRUM is about freedom of choice, there is no diet to get on and no diet to get off. Nothing is forbidden. No guilt, no shame, no pressure. THE SPECTRUM is based on love– joy of living, not fear of dying. Feeling better, not denying yourself pleasure.

First, determine your health and wellness goals. Do you want to lose weight? Do you have high cholesterol? Is diabetes a problem in your family? Based on your individual needs and goals, THE SPECTRUM has examples of six individually-tailored lifestyle programs ideally suited for you: lowering cholesterol, losing weight, lowering blood pressure, preventing/reversing diabetes, preventing/reversing certain types of prostate and breast cancer, preventing/reversing heart disease.
