Taming March Madness

Intro Pic

Welcome to the March issue of the Wild Divine Newsletter. While some may associate March with “Madness” (Spring Fever, NCAA Basketball), we’d propose a more enlightened focus of Taming March Madness. Everyone knows that it’s healthy to have fun, but it relieves stress even further to come back to meditative practices and sound mind/body disciplines on a daily basis.

We welcome Shiva Rea as our newest contributing author! Shiva offers her Yoga expertise stemming from the Krishnamacharya lineage, tantra, ayurveda, yogic art and somatic movement. Our first article by Shiva offers a breathing exercise that you can practice in your own time. This month’s Mind-Body Matters section includes a linked article from the experts at the Mayo Clinic called Biofeedback: Using your mind to improve your health. And, don’t forget about our contest where you can suggest stores that should be selling the Wild Divine’s products; help us find new outlets, and you might win a $250 SpaFinder gift certificate. This contest ends March 31, 2006, so act now!

Don’t miss our Taming March Madness special offer! For a limited time, we will include a free Journey to Wild Divine Soundtrack CD with every order of the Bundle Pack. See the Exclusive Offers section to the left for details. In the Things We Love section, you’ll find information about Yoga Shakti, our Vinyasa Yoga DVD favorite.  And, check out the It’s All Happening section for information on our exciting exhibitions in CeBit in Germany and Expo West in Anaheim, CA.

We’ve also included a Meditation Tip by Dr. Dean Ornish and a new Breathing Tip from Anna Coy; both Dean and Anna serve as guides within Wisdom Quest. Finally, you’ll find another training tip to help you apply The Passage to your daily life, as well as a message from Deepak Chopra.

Main Story

Riding Your Breath Home

This concentration practice grounds you in the present moment.

By Shiva Rea

Shiva Rea

All of the meditation techniques around the world use concentration as an entry point to a meditative state. In the Yoga Sutra, Patanjali describes concentration as 'fixing the consciousness on one point or region" and meditation as "the steady, continuous flow of concentration". Concentration serves meditation by grounding our awareness in the present moment, a gift that is cultivated in the stillness of meditation and brought out into our daily lives.

Try this: Find a comfortable posture for meditation (seated on cushion or blanket, in a chair or against a wall). Place your palms facing up in jnana mudra (forefinger and thumb touching) with your palms facing up to open your awareness or facing down to calm the mind. Scan your body and relax any tension. Let your spine rise from the ground of the pelvis. Draw your chin slightly down and let the back of your neck lengthen.

Meditation Tip
Dean Ornish, MD Dean Ornish, MD

Meditation is effortless, and it is hard work. When you focus on something sooner or later (usually sooner), your mind will wander.

When you become aware that your mind is wandering and that you are thinking of something else, then just gently but firmly bring it back, over and over again. Without judging yourself, criticizing yourself, or berating yourself. If you understand that a wandering mind is part of the process, then you won’t beat yourself up for not being able to concentrate because you know it happens to everyone. With practice, you will probably find that your mind wanders a little less each time than before.

Training Tip:
The Passage
Passage Tip Image

Day into Night Spinner

Invigorate and Play!

Try this: Practice a sunrise/sunset meditation to bring balance to your day. Make it a point this week to get up early to watch the sunrise and/or the sunset (if this is not possible or feasible for you to do, you can just as easily close your eyes and visualize it happening). Though, of course, no amount of breathing can speed up or slow down this event, you can still draw energy from this cosmic exchange. At sunrise, imagine the first rays of pink light giving you a clearer, calmer perspective with which to begin your day; at sunset, receive the cool, calming yin of night and allow your energy to come down, letting the light and all residual tensions go, while the dark fills you with peace. Making time to include and participate in the day taking shape and then coming to an end each day not only builds in some quiet time for you, but helps put your mind and body in tune with the larger cosmic rhythms.

Letter from Deepak Chopra
Deepak Chopra Deepak Chopra, MD

Dear Friends,

Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future. The past is closed and limited, the future is open and free.
—Dr. Deepak Chopra

In practical terms surrender means letting go. Although you don't realize it, reality isn't a given. Each of us inhabits a separate reality. Your mind maintains your personal version of reality by buttressing it with beliefs, expectations, and interpretations. Your mind blocks the free flow of the life force by saying, "This is how things must and should be." Letting go releases you from the insistent grip, and when you let go, new forms of reality can enter.
