Tips for a Less Stressful
Holiday Season
We all know that the holiday season can be both
a joyful and a stressful time. For most people, December combines
the gift of giving with the hassle of traveling, the fulfillment
of sharing with the pressure of getting a lot done in a short
period of time.
To help make the holidays a little easier, this
month's newsletter is devoted to tips for a healthier, happier
holiday. We've included a list of tips from our friends at the
Mind-Body Medicine Institute about how to use
mindfulness to reduce stress, along with a guide to less stressful
traveling from the Center for Mind-Body Medicine.
We're also excited to announce a special offer that lets you
save $20 when you purchase Wisdom Quest and The
Passage together; see the Exclusive Offers
section to the left to learn how to give the gift the wellness
to your friends and loved ones. You'll also find a new meditation
tip from Dr. Dean Ornish and another great
breathing tip from Anna Coy; both Dean and
Anna serve as guides within Wisdom Quest, and through
the end of the year you can save $15 on Anna's
Whole Body Breathing Series (see the "Shopping" section
below). As always, we've also provided training tips to help
you apply The Passage to your daily life, along with
this month's letter from Deepak Chopra. Check out the Things
We Love section to the left to find out more about
the enthralling music from Wisdom Quest created by
our good friend Jonathan Goldman.
We love to see you in-person! Check out the It's
All Happening section to the left to see our event
schedule for the next month, and please come see us and bring
a friend! As always, we appreciate your support and hope we
can help you enjoy The Journey to its fullest.

Main Story |
Mindfulness: The Foundation for
Stress Management
We know that stress is a condition of our lives
today, yet there are a number of ways to manage it more effectively.
At the Mind/Body Medical Institute, we teach people to become
more fully aware of the mind/body connection and of their own
ability to combat stress and harness the healing power within.
At the M/BMI, the relaxation response is the foundation of stress
management. Take a few minutes to try the following relaxation-response
based techniques. If you can build one or two into your daily
routine, you will see a noticeable improvement in your mood,
ability to sleep, and general well-being.

Tips for Travelers from the Center
for Mind-Body Medicine
During the spring and summer I spent about a month
on the road talking about my book, Manifesto for a New
Medicine. Susan Buell Gorner, the Center staffer who
valiantly kept track of my itinerary at that time, suggested
I should write this column about travel tips. After all, I'm
not the only one spending an unbelievable amount of time on
the road. So here are a few thoughts about how to stay a little
healthier and saner while traveling:
Getting Ready to Go
Everybody does this differently, and I do it differently at
different times. Occasionally, I pack a couple of days ahead
of time, but most often I do it in the half hour before my shower
on the morning I'm leaving. I have found it helpful to not to
think too much about going away. It's nice occasionally to savor
an upcoming trip -- anticipating an oasis of relaxation in a
desert of hard work -- but it still surprises me when people
ask "if I'm looking forward to this trip." That's
because I rarely think about where I'm going or that I'm going
until it's the very next item on my agenda. It's a way I've
developed over the years to help me to stay in the present,
to allow me to devote my complete attention to what I'm doing
now. Usually I find that, once I'm away, I'm also able to keep
my mind on where I am and not have it drifting too much back
to where I was.

| Meditation Tip |
 |
DeanOrnish, MD |
When I was severely depressed at age nineteen, I was in such an agitated state that I literally could not stop pacing around the room. How was I going to sit still and meditate when I couldn't stop moving? You start where you are and do what you can. If you can only meditate for thirty seconds, then meditate for thirty seconds. During those few seconds, your mind may wander a thousand times. Just keep bringing it back, gently and firmly, with the discipline and love that you would offer a puppy or a small child.
For many people, sports becomes a meditation. If you participate in gymnastics or diving or basketball or football and you don't pay attention, you are more likely to hurt yourself. One of the joys of playing sports is that it forces you to focus.

Breathing
Tip |
 |
Anna Coy |
'Tis the season of Chaos. If you are one of the typically busy bodies during this time of year, then you need to take a moment to realize that you can breathe slowly and properly while multitasking at high velocity. Taking one or two deep full breaths into your body should result in an overall feeling similar to the one you get after being at the spa all day.

Training
Tip:
The Passage |
|
The Bow
and Arrow Activity: Try this the next time you
find yourself about to make a snap judgment, a defensive reaction,
or a hasty decision, stop yourself for a moment and remember
how letting go of the arrow too soon can leave you much further
off the mark than you'd intended. Take the time you need to
sense your energy-is it too ramped up? Too lethargic? Balance
doesn't always mean hitting your mark on target, but it does
mean that you give each action with consideration of the possible
results. |
Letter
from Deepak Chopra |
 |
Deepak Chopra, MD |
We all experience situations and circumstances in our lives in which someone crosses some personal boundary, triggering a strong emotional response. I have found that conscious communication helps express these boundaries and forge new connections. This exercise is derived from Marshall Rosenberg's enriching book Nonviolent Communication.
