Main Story

Good Breathing, Bad Breathing

Breathing is behavior, a unique behavior that regulates body chemistry, pH.

By Peter M. Litchfield, Ph.D
Shiva Rea

Breathing is behavior, a behavior that regulates acid-base physiology.  Acid-base physiology is about pH balance of body fluids, including blood and the fluids that surround tissue cells.  The effects of deregulated pH (or chemistry) on health and performance can be dramatic and profound.  The way you have learned to breathe may have a much greater impact on you, than you might have ever imagined!

Good breathing behavior means proper regulation of body chemistry (pH).  Bad breathing behavior means deregulating body chemistry.  Breathing, like any other behavior, is regulated in varying degrees by learning, and thus by motivation, emotion, cognition, perception, and memory.

Mind-Body Matters

The Physical and Psychological Effects of Meditation

by Eugene Taylor, Ph.D

Meditation—that great and mysterious subject which in the past has always conjured up the image of the solitary Asian ascetic sitting in deep trance—is fast appearing in unexpected places throughout modern American culture. Secretaries are doing it as part of their daily noon yoga classes.  Preadolescent teenagers dropped off at the YMCA by their mothers on a Saturday morning are learning it as part of their karate training. Truck drivers and housewives in the Stress Reduction Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center are practicing a combination of Hindu yoga and Buddhist insight meditation to control hypertension.  Star athletes prepare themselves for a demanding basketball game with centering techniques they learned in Zen.

Meditation Tip
Dean Ornish, MD Dean Ornish, MD

Lonely or Alone

I want to distinguish between feeling lonely and being alone. You can feel lonely while walking down the street in New York City surrounded by thousands of people. You can be filled with love and feelings of interconnectedness while meditating or praying alone in church, synagogue, or a mountaintop.

Letter from Deepak Chopra
Anna Coy Deepak Chopra, MD

Dear Friends,

Commitment is one-pointed intention toward the fulfillment of your deepest desires. Commitment initiated at a deep level of awareness orchestrates its own fulfillment. The organization of nature's forces to fulfill your intentions occurs as the result of a shift in context and meaning.

Training Tip:
The Passage
Passage Tip Image

Door to Meruka
Relax and Play

Try this: The next time you go to forcefully or aggressively bring about a desired outcome, step back and see what happens when you let go. This doesn't mean abandon your cause or walk away, but rather stay focused and calm. Breathe deeply and center yourself in trust and peace, and watch opportunities open themselves to you.

Breathing Tip
Deepak Chopra Anna Coy
A small but important reminder

By Anna Coy

This is the time of year to spend some of your day in the light of the sun and to watch the moon welcome you into the night.

Take one morning this June to get up early enough to see the sunrise for the day and be in a breathing meditative state. Feel and enjoy the moment. Set your intention for the day.  On that same day, watch the moon rise and thank yourself for a wonderful day well spent.  Treat yourself with kindness all day long.
