Brainwaves
and Higher Consciousness
by Russ Mason, M.S.
As we move through our daily activities—preparing
meals, running errands, sitting quietly, perhaps meditating,
sleeping—the electrical activity in our brains reflects
and supports what we are doing. That is because our brains produce
four principal waves, or electrical rhythms; and each rhythm
will reflect a corresponding psycho-physiological state.
The four brainwave rhythms are: beta (13-28 Hz), alpha (8-12
Hz), theta (4-7 Hz), and delta (0.5-3.5 Hz) and they can be
measured and tracked with an electroencephalograph, or EEG.
(Hz stands for Hertz, or cycles per second). Slower brainwave
cycles tend toward relaxation, drowsiness and sleep; faster
cycles reflect more engaging mental activities. As you read
this, your brain is primarily in beta waves, which is when you
are most alert. When you are fully relaxed, or meditate, your
brain moves into an alpha state. When you are in a borderline
sleep/dream state—often called hypnogogic—this is
a theta state. Delta waves are indicative of deep sleep.

Journey to Wild Divine Training Tip
|
| Breathe and
Awaken

Try this: Sit for a moment and try the heart breath
with your eyes closed. See the breath filling you with
awareness and beauty, and a connection to all things.
Consider the breath not just as an exercise but as a
gift to yourself.Think of one thing that feels different
about you, something that surprises or pleases you,
something you never realized or never thought about until now.
Allow the breath to awaken a sense of compassion and self-acceptance,
and treasure that part of you that’s yours alone. |
